Top 5 covers of 2009

Truth be told, I should have a 10 top covers list below, but evidently I really didn’t keep good track of all the covers I listened to this year…   However, the following five are on constant rotation on my ipod and therefore are listed as my top 5 for 2009.

5. 6PM — Down The Line (Jose Gonzalez cover)

I always enjoy a little splash of electronic elements on an otherwise organic track, which is exactly what 6PM did with   this cover of Jose Gonzalez’s “Down The Line” by 6PM.   6PM is the Spanish duo of Ivan Oubina and Rual Mon.   This track can be found on their Tape Worms EP.

4. Coury Palermo – Here Comes the Rain Again (Eurythmics cover)

Spectacular cover of a classic and beloved Eurythmics track. Coury takes a minimalist take with organic flare and let’s his voice soar, twist and dive into an abyss of orchestration.

3. Jeppe – Johhny Come Home (Fine Young Cannibals cover)

Jeppe Laursen was one half of Junior Senior (the other half being, Jesper Mortensen), who scored a huge hit with “Move Your Feet“. Late 2008, both members called it quits to pursue solo ventures. And the first effort for Jeppe was this cover of Fine Young Cannibals’ ‘Johnny Come Home’.

2. Something A La Mode – Little Bit of Feel Good [ft. Adam Jospeh] (Jamie Lidell cover)

Originally found on Jamie’s 2008 album, JIM. Something A La Mode (SALM) gives a Jamie Lidell soul track a daft punk facelift. And Adam Jospeh‘s voice rocks this cover. Would love to hear Adam do more tracks similar to this.

  1. Taken By Trees — My Boys (Animal Collective cover)

Wonderful treatment of a spectacular track. Taken by Trees is the moniker used by Victoria Bergsman, whom you might recognize as the voice from Peter Bjorn and John’s, “Young Folks”. The instrumentation on this track reminds me of Vampire Weekend.
