Tricky - Far Away

28 06 2008

More of up straight up mellow rock track from Tricky’s latest effort titled, “Knowle West Boy”. I have had this track looping for about an hour now… :)

Bio from last.fm:

Adrian Thaws (born January 27, 1968), better known as Tricky, is an English rapper and musician important in the trip-hop and british music scene (despite loathing the “trip-hop” tag).

He is noted for an asthmatic whispering lyrical style that is half-rapped, half-sung. As a producer and a musician he is known for having an aversion to perfection preferring to build up a dark, rich and layered sound. Culturally, Tricky bridges white and black Britain particularly in his fusion of rock and hip-hop, high art and pop culture. He drew his influences from rap Public Enemy to post-punk (he covered a Siouxsie and the Banshees’s song Tattoo).

Di Johnston - Trite

27 06 2008

Track has a slight vocoder effect on the vocals over the chorus that works wonders for this track. Think Royksopp vocoders meets mellowed out electronics.

bio from last.fm:

Di Johnston was born in Hong Kong to two US diplomats. After stints in mainland China and Virginia, she moved to New York where she began her performing career.

Within months of arrival, Di began to establish herself as a voice-over actor in NYC. She became the voice of many commercial campaigns, including Lincoln Mercury, Pantene, Lenscrafters, Verizon Wireless, PNC Bank and CMT. In 2006, she was selected as the announcer for the Miss America Pageant.

Recently, Di began applying her vocal talents to various musical pursuits. After releasing a few tracks on producer Dave Liang’s Shanghai Restoration Project to an enthusiastic response - her song “Jade Buddha Temple” was featured as the single of the week on iTunes Japan and played on KCRW’s “New Ground” - Di decided to take the sound one step further and record her own EP. She wanted to mix in some Chinese instruments as a nod to her upbringing, and decided to tackle the ubiquitous theme of flawed love without taking the subject too seriously. Liang’s astute production and musicianship were the keys to creating a lush layering of music and vocals to complement Di’s naturally seductive voice.

Azoora - You Capture Me (in slow motion remix)

24 06 2008

Loving this remix of Azoora’s “You Caputer Me” from their latest ep titled, “Revelations”, which can be downloaded for free from here:

bio from last.fm page:

“Azoora” are a blend of acoustic electronica which combines that dreamy shoe-gazing feel with a charming British indie twist. They have recently released their debut EP “Tall Tales” in which they have two alternative takes of each of their tracks, having both an original, and respective remix to tantalise most tastes. The album “Long Time Standing” is well underway to being completed this year. It will offer more of a wide mix of genres, being a double album with original and remixes presented seperately.

London based multi-instrumentalist John Purcell produces the band. Vocals are provided by the songwriter Paul Loader who now lives in Göteborg, Sweden and travels back to London to record in the studio with John, Ben Cochrane provides live drums and Trudi Laurence the fantastic complementary backing vocals.

The Pragmatic - Do You Blame Me

23 06 2008

Karl F Kling’s vocals remind me quite a bit of Ben Gibbard (of Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service) but a little deeper. Their music is kinda whimsical at times yet it never gets too silly, and can evoke memories of 80’s bands. This particular track even has some cool chip-tune sounds and just for good measure also throws a splash of Disney-esque electrical parade music in there too (watch the video below if you haven’t had the pleasure of hearing and seeing the electrical parade yourself).

Bronski Beat - I Feel Love (ft. Marc Almond)

22 06 2008

From the wiki:

In 1985, the trio joined up with Marc Almond to record a version of the Donna Summer classic “I Feel Love”. The full version was actually a medley, also incorporating snippets of Summer’s “Love to Love You Baby” and John Leyton’s “Johnny Remember Me”. It was a huge success, reaching #3 in the UK, equalling the chart achievement of “Smalltown Boy”. Although the original had been one of Marc Almond’s all-time favourite songs, he had never read the lyrics and thus incorrectly sang “What’ll it be, what’ll it be, you and me” instead of “Falling free, falling free, falling free”.
