Hitting with persian flare is Riva Starr with this delicious house number. Riva Starr is a relative new comer on the house scene but has been building up a large following in the last two years.

Riva Starr – I Was Drunk

Lyrics are quite fun, check them here:

Yesterday I was drunk
With some chicks in night club
I don’t remember who came back with me

And tonight I will drink
With some chicks in the club
I’m not sure I want uh lalala

For more hilarity, watch this video for I was Drunk:

Last.fm bio:

“He’s got a golden future ahead of him” – IDJ.

Every once in a while a new producer just smashes their way through into the bigtime. That’s what’s happening with Riva Starr’s sneak-in-and-blow-the-place-up approach. An act whose influence comes from blogs, wild afterparties, music that works for the kids as well as the cool ubercoolische europeans, Riva seems to have sprung onto the scene fully formed – but in reality he’s been working his arse off for years.

Riva Starr plunders the best in tech house and beeping, burping synth lines to create a dirty, messy dancefloor affair. His first appearance on Jesse Rose’s ubercool Frontroom label with the Thizzle EP led to a release on Claude Vonstroke’s pivotal Dirtybird label with the WTF?! EP – described by IDJ as “essential – 5/5”. Then there were two releases in quick succession on Southern Fried – a remix of Armand van Helden’s smash J’Taime, and his own EP, Scratch’n’Itch, which had raves from a stupidly wide variety of DJs…

And the gigs have kept apace. Just in the last months there’s been a China tour, Glastonbury, Glade and Fusion Festivals, two slots at the Winter Music Conference – the Dirtybird party and a huge Lot49 event – an Australian and US tour on the pipeline and definitely more to come…
A single mix offered to the influential Discobelle blog was downloaded TWELVE THOUSAND times, and a sneaky download of a DJ edit of La Conga, his followup single on Dirtybird, lead to that single going top 5 on Beatport through pure word of mouth – no ads, a secret release with no press, and it had gone top 10 in the tech-house chart before Beatport decided maybe the track should have some advertising…

As the Scatterblog review of Riva’s career says … “It’s not like he has a big trademark bassline, or some sort of analog synth style (although he does have some mad analog synths), instead he incorporates a range of different sounds. It seems like the main thing that ties each song together is just that each one has an awesome hook of some kind. Music is all about having a cool sounding something these days, it’s not about ripping out some big guitar solo, or having a really musically sound piece (how many songs are based around three notes these days, but sound fresh as), Riva Starr is easily on top of all that…”

What’s next? A follow-up on Southern Fried with a Derrick Carter rmx. A new sampleadelic track Maria on Get Physical’s Kindisch records that is already doing damages worldwide reaching the top 10 on the Beatport house chart, a new single on Jesse Rose’MADE TO PLAY…
Collaborations with London’s underground scene. A few remixes due out during the summer (check out his remix for Exploited rec with the featuring of the 2 dupstep mcs Jammer&Frisco!). And a new label, Snatch! – for the stripped-back musical types who aren’t ashamed to get their rave on…

Hot track from Mike Monday. Mike Monday is on a mission to release a new single once a week for 10 weeks. Robot Go Disco is the week 2 give-away. All tracks are free for download till September 20th 2010. This track has a fun party/prince vibe to it. All Mike asks for return is your email address and perhaps an old tip in the jar, paypal style.

This track from Bot’ Ox has grown on me since my initial listening. It starts with a metronome and builds to the misty melancholic voice of Anna Jean. The music is drenched in a synthetic veneer and pulsates to an 8-bit drum machine.

Make me happy music here folks. For those that follow this blog know I have a soft spot for 80′s synth pop and in particular anything related to depeche mode. Though in this post, it’s a matter of 1 degree removed, as in Vince Clark founding member left the band to create Yazoo and later Erasure. Andy Bell (front man and singer for Erasure) has just released his new solo effort called, “Non-Stop”. See, it’s related : P

Anyhoo, here are two remixes that have the “sweet spot” for me. The first is by “Hey Champ” and they take Andy’s album cut and infused some polished disco dust on it. I actually prefer this remix over the album version.

Andy Bell – Call On Me (Hey Champ Remix)

The second is the winner, and rightly fully so, of the recent remix contest Andy had for his track, “Say What You Want”. This remix was created by a Ste Ashworth. I have no idea who Ste is, but I sure as hell loved how he framed Andy’s voice in an Erasure-esque backing track. Love it!

Andy Bell – Say What You Want (Joy Joy Mix)

“Extroverts at Play” is an Audio Drums exclusive from the new Color Theory album, The Sound. I love the Goldfrapp feel of this track with an unrelenting and almost brooding bassline. What completes this track is the chorus and the contempt of Brian’s voice as he sings, “If they would just shut up” — ya, i’m total agreement with Brian.

The Sound features 9 all-new originals and a cover of a-ha’s classic “Living a Boy’s Adventure Tale.” Packaged in a 6-panel Digipak with original art by himitsuhana, the CD is limited to 1,000 copies worldwide and is available for pre-order at colortheory.com.

In addition to the standard Limited Edition CD, Brian Hazard of Color Theory is trying out something new: The Individual Edition CD. Hazard describes it as follows:

“As a souvenir of your support, I will create a personalized custom CD featuring unique mixdowns of each of the 12 songs I recorded for the album. The outtakes “Touch” and “Release the Hounds” are not on the standard Limited Edition CD and will not appear on any future physical release. The disc will open with a token of my appreciation – a spoken ”thank you” mentioning you by name.”

You can read all about it and get a taste of each of the album’s 10 tracks here: http://colortheory.com/the-sound-available-for-pre-order

Lyrics:

Extroverts at Play
©2010 Brian Hazard (ASCAP)

They don’t know what they believe
So we stare and nod as they think out loud
Trying our best to fit in
As we fight for breath in this stifling crowd
And the time races by when you’re having some fun
But it’s plodding along now at quarter to one
As the night tries our patience we’re hitting a wall
I sneak off to the side like I’m taking a call to observe

Extroverts at play
Egos run amuck
I’d like them well enough
If they would just shut up
But we will persevere
By sheer force of will
We’ll stoically endure
This social overkill

Maybe someday this will
Come to us more naturally but
Until then we’ll have to pretend

Tomorrow we’ll take the whole day
To recuperate in a private place
Sleeping or reading a book
Our resilience now is our saving grace
So just try to imagine, it’s not such a stretch
I’m the life of the party and it is the death of me
Here in my eyes you’re the belle of the ball
With the hint of a smile you enchant more than all of the…

We’ll hone our acting skills
Fake it ’til we make it baby
Until then we’ll have to pretend

Ready for a fun house jam? Focusing on the oboe set against a minimal house beat is Klezmer from Pizetta. This was originally released back in April of 09 on Electrochoc Records based in France, but continues to find it way into my playlists.

Sexy and chilled track for summer which features the talented Giselle Rosselli on vocals. This is one of those tracks I know will make my best of 2010 list and will be in heavy rotation on my iPod — yes, it’s that good. This is the first official release from Flight Facilities who are also working on a full lenght due later this year.

Happy Friday and with it comes a killer new track from Jai Paul. This track starts off really quiet, so hang-in there for about 15 seconds.

Delicate vocals, dark throbbing bass, and diplo-esque beats adorn this track. Got this tip from Dan Black, via his tweet, “Dan__Black: RT @ads_b: The unknown UK producer that @dan__black has on high rotation: http://ow.ly/2chah”

Also found this Dan Black quote from http://adambaidawi.com/blog, which is probably the best description of this track:

“He’s got something unique—it’s weird. Somewhere in between Burial and Prince: sort of dubstep, haunting vocals…really amazing. I think that kid’s going to end up being huge. I think it’s the first or second thing he’s posted.”

I agree with Dan completely, I have had this stuck on repeat for the entire morning. Beautiful, sublime, and engaging — what more do you need?

Chilled disco house from Norway’s very own Lindstrøm & Christabelle. To my ears, it sounds like Lindstrom is a big fan of Micheal Jackson’s “Off the Wall” album that was produced by the master Quincy Jones. I can hear echo’s of the production through out their full length release, “Real Life Is No Cool”. Lovesick is the standout track for me, with it’s syncopated guitar work and Christabelle’s smooth as silk vocals.

Lindstrøm & Christabelle – Lovesick

bio from Last.fm

After the release of Lindstrøm’s critically acclaimed solo album Where You Go I Go Too, in 2008 and 2009`s collaborative album with Prins Thomas, II, … Norway’s maestro of disco returns once again. This time he teams up with sultry vocalist Christabelle, to bring us Real Life Is No Cool, an edgy pop album of structured chaos and hypnotic beats.

Hans-Peter Lindstrøm actually began work on Real Life Is No Cool before Where You Go I Go Too, it just so happened WYGIGT was finished first. It was his work on this new album, containing 10 short pop songs with vocals, which became the impetus behind creating the epic and colossal masterpiece, WYGIGT (with only 3 long tracks and a opening track clocking in at 28 minutes). Essentially, WYGIGT was a kind of reaction to his work on Real Life Is No Cool. When WYGIGT began making waves around the world, Lindstrøm went back into his studio to complete Real Life Is No Cool.

Christabelle (also known as Solale to Lindstrøm followers) has been working on and off with Lindstrøm since 2001. Their relationship began when she immediately fell in love with his sound after hearing her brother Dennis (a friend of Lindstrøm) play some of his tracks at home. Upon listening, she proceeded to lay down vocals on some of his tracks, and her brother then delivered them to Lindstrøm. His first impression was, “Wow! This sounds totally fresh, wild and quirky”. A meeting was set up and the two found a common ground. ”We found out that we shared many of the same musical references, such as Motown, Grace Jones, 80s soul, Vanity 6, etc.” says Lindstrøm. “We even tried to make a cover of Zapp`s ‘Computer Love’. This meeting led to a collaboration resulting in two 12”s — 2003’s “Music In My Mind” and 2005’s “Let’s Practice” (then under the name Lindstrøm and Solale). They never planned on making an album together, but the collaboration slowly evolved into a collection of songs that ended up becoming Real Life Is No Cool. (The title is a line taken from the album track ‘Keep It Up’ — a track about violent relationships.)

Christabelle, whose full name is Christabelle Silje Isabelle Birgitta Sandoo, was born in 1981 to a Norwegian mother and a father from Mauritius (an island in the Indian ocean) in Oslo, Norway. Her father is a musician and music teacher, her mother a vocalist, and her brother a drummer. “All my life I have been surrounded by music, musicians, and instruments, so it was kind of obvious that I would also make music”. She started working with some of the best producers in Norway, but got off to on the wrong foot as she soon rebelled against their slick sound and attitude. As she said, “There was simply no room for going crazy and having fun, and I didn’t want to sell my nomad soul”. One of the things that attracted Lindstrøm was this rebellion against being “produced”. He would just let Christabelle do what she was inspired to do – she found room for improvisation and was able to let herself loose working with him. She created most of the lyrics on the spot, while the two were jamming, and recorded half of the tracks’ vocals at home and on her own, using a simple Shure SM55 “elvis”-mic, which gave her vocals an intimate and raw character. Lindstrøm would then edit and produce the jams later. Christabelle was not into the house music that Lindstrøm was into at the time, which forced him to think differently. The result was a more loose and improvised sound than what Lindstrøm had done before.

Lindstrøm calls their collaboration “structured chaos”, him being the structure and Christabelle bringing the chaos. This chaos is also very much a part of Christabelle`s personal life. She has always been a nomad — impulsive and restless, she’s a self-described “on-the-road girl”. She moved to London when she was 16, and, since then, has lived in Paris, Marseille, Mauritius, and Stockholm. She now lives in Oslo. She is, in many ways, the total opposite of Lindstrøm, who lives a quiet family life and makes disco nine to five, Monday to Friday, traveling to play one gig a month so that he can have time with his family. Real Life Is No Cool is a meeting of these two different personalities.
