From Scottish DJ Lex Blackmore (aka BlueBoy), we have his 1997 dance hit, “Remember Me”.  The track is built around two samples from “Woman of the Ghetto“, a 1969 soul song by Marlena Shaw. From wiki:

“The original song ["Woman of the Ghetto] is polemic to legislators delivered by a woman from a black American ghetto. Near the end is the line: “Remember me? I’m the one who had your babies”, in reference to black maids raising white children for little pay in America. This sample is repeated throughout “Remember Me”, as is a sample of a scat portion of the refrain.”

Tonight was a landmark show for So You Think You Can Dance because of what transpired when Alex Wong, a trained ballet dance from Vancouver, British Columbia did with a Napoleon and Tabitha D’umo hip hop routine which saw him dancing with all star Stephen “Twitch” Boss.   It was nothing short of spectacular, you could feel the energy from the start it and  never let up.    This was pure magic and the track they danced to was, “Outta Your Mind” by Lil Jon featuring LMFAO.

Mouth’s Cradle is making waves; seamlessly combining pop and hip-hop into a unique blend. But their mix is not an acquired taste. Loving this remix which takes Just Jack’s, “Embers” and cuts and sliced it with Wale’s voice over the top of it.  Simply brilliant!   Watch out for a sick build around the 2:35 mark.  Be sure to swing by Phillip’s soundcloud page and drop some love.

I’m from Detroit but moved to Atlanta for university.  Growing up I really enjoyed listening to heartland rock by guys like Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, and Bob Segar, but when I hit high school I met a bunch of italian kids that turned me onto dance music.  I’ve always liked music that put emphasis on melody, whether it was Mark Knopfler’s guitar work in DIre Straits or Above & Beyond’s lead key lines in “Air For Life.”  For Ember’s, I thought Just Jack lead violin hook was incredibley melodic and it could serve as a great beat for someone to rap over.  So i chopped up the song, added vocals, drums, and a whole bunch of other stuff.  To make sure I kept to my dance roots, I also added my own electro-house break down at the end so I could get bodies banging on the dancefloor.

Previously unreleased track from Kid Cudi sees him laying down his unique flow over a bed of Bob Dylan, pure joy.

Latest track from Sade’s forthcoming album due out in February 8th 2010.  This track is a slight departure from Sade’s signature sound and features more edgier  sounds such as hard rockin’ guitar licks and military-esque snare drum hits.  But I suppose that latter is to tie into the “Soldier” theme of the track.   Also this track features more modern hip hop elements.

Picking up where The Creatures left off and infusing the off-kilter instrumentation with some soul is Planningtorock.  Planningtorock is:

The alter ego of multi-instrumentalist/programmer/videographer Janine Rostron, Planningtorock fuses all of Rostron’s talents into a dazzling audiovisual presentation that borrows from classical music, glam rock, spacey imagery, and hip-hop. A classically trained violinist who began playing at age eight, Rostron moved from Bolton, Lancashire, to Berlin in 2002 the Planningtorock persona first surfaced in 2004, when she began performing at the city’s clubs. Planningtorock’s live shows blurred the boundaries between concerts and performance art, with Rostron wearing outlandish helmets and costumes and interacting with video characters. Planningtorock’s debut single Modern Love and the Weimar Tour EP arrived early the following year and showcased Rostron’s unique mix of pizzicato strings, beats, and husky vocals that could change from bluesy to quirky (or vice versa) at a moment’s notice. In 2004, Rostron issued the MP3 EP Topics on a Foreign Mind via Twisted Nerve Records, as well as EP Eins — which featured the underground hit “Local Foreigner” — on her own Rostron imprint (which also released work by the Knife, the Soft Pink Truth, and Kevin Blechdom). After signing to Chicks on Speed Records, Planningtorock released the limited-edition 7” Changes/I Wanna Bite Ya early in 2006 and her first full-length, Have It All, that summer.

New KiD CuDi – Pursuit of Happiness (ft. MGMT & Ratatat)

Yet another great find on thesixtyone.com, this time we have a get up and dance tune with some hip hop flavor.  This really gets going about mid-way through, so be sure to let it ride for awhile.

Shoops is a duo (David and Yury) from Montreal, Quebec Canada which features Crookers-esque dance inspired builds and clever well produced vocals  — an amalgamation that’s easy to get addicted too.

A soothing, yet compelling rhythm pushes this track with vocals from Natty.

Nitin Sawhney – Days of Fire (ft Natty)

Rough and ready production courtesy of one Kanye West, vocals samples of Santogold, and the lyrical stylings of Jay-Z all add up to one sic track.   The backing track sounds like a dark and mysterious marching band making its way through thick fog, think zombie dark.  This track is currently on the soundtrack for Notorious.

Jesscia Tonder is a cross between Lykke Li and Lily Allen with a dash of sultry soul finesse.  The twenty two year old is set to release her album, “The Robot & The Little Girl “.   This is tops in my book, and how can I can not love another artist that shares my love for Robots!

Spank Rock – Put That Pussy On Me (Diplo Tonite Remix) — from the talented Diplo, and yes I know it’s from 2005.  What can I say, I some how missed this.

Lupe Fiasco – Superstar (ft Young Jeezy & Ti & Matthew Santos) Remix — beautiful chorus on this from Matthew Santos.

The Pharcyde – Passin’ Me By (Hot Chip Remix) – anything Hot Chip touches is alright by me, and how can you not love the Nightmares on Wax sample used in the intro and for the drum kick.

Kayne West – Street Lights (Max Justus Remix) — emotional track, made all the better with a little remix help from Max Justus.

As always, I just love Kathrin deBoer’s vocals on just about anything.  And to add to my collection of tracks which feature Kathrin’s voice, is her recently released album with her group Belleruche, “The Express”.  My favorite track from this release is, “Like 4 the Hard Way” which has a lazy jazzy feel to it.

Parisian hip-hop devotee Laurent Daumail is one of a few but growing number of French artists updating hip-hop for the chill-out crowd, drawing on the beats’n’samples groundwork of producers such as Rakim, DJ Premier, and Prince Paul and combining it with broad, impressionistic strokes of dub, jazz, and soundtrack-y ambience. Like countrymen the Mighty Bop and la Funk Mob, Cam is stylistically closest to Mo’Wax artists such as DJ Shadow and DJ Krush; minimalist, downbeat instrumental hip-hop built from obscure samples and stomp-box turntable accompaniment, bent and twisted into new, artfully arranged compositions.

His debut, 1994’s Underground Vibes, was released on the tiny French label Street Jazz and was followed by a live recording for the Inflammable imprint (one of only a few “live” recordings in a genre so reliant on the temporal concessions of the recording studio). Dubbed Underground Live, the album featured performed extrapolations of many of the tracks from his debut, as well as a few new and improvised tracks. Now nearly impossible to find, those first two albums were reissued in America by Shadow Records, packaged together as the single-CD priced Mad Blunted Jazz (particularly useful since acquiring both on import could run more than 50 dollars!).

Although Cam’s music has found little acceptance in his home country, audiences in the U.K., Japan, and America have begun picking up on his style. In 1996 Cam was featured on, among many others, the sprawling Mo’Wax compilation Headz 2, remixed tracks for such artists as Tek 9 and la Funk Mob, and most recently collaborated on live and in-studio projects with Snooze and DJ Krush (he co-wrote a few tracks on the latter’s 1997 Mo’Wax release, Mi Sound).
