Well this has been a long time in coming, Blancmange is back from a 26 year hiatus with a brand new album called, “Blanc Burn”.  I’ve listened to the album about four times now and the two stand out tracks for me is the first single, “Drive Me” and the album cut, “Don’t Forget Your Teeth”.   “Don’t Forget Your Teeth” has a whimsical charm that is hard to deny.   It sounds like a track that would have been included in Trainspotting had it been around at the time.  Welcome back Blancmange!

This is the latest collaboration for Odd Year which features the talents of Brian Hazard of Color Theory.  Brian is a singer songwriter, producer, and keyboardist that has been on tear as of late.  His song, “If It’s My Time to Go” (from his latest full length, “The Thought Chapter“) won the Grand Prize in the electronic category of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest.

Going back to the crates on this one, back in 1995 when electronica started to get darker and edgier came along Ruby.   They had a great first outing with their debut release, “Salt Peter”.  Ruby was the partnership of Lesley Rankine and Mark Walk.  Lesley is currently on hiatus in her home country of Scotland, while Mark Walk currently resides in LA and is producing music for TV and Film.  I hope Lesley will return and grace us with her vocals on some much needed new tunes.  I can’t tell you home many times I listened to “Salt Peter” on CD.  Lesley has a certain Growl to her voice that just cuts.

Paul De Homem-Christo newest project sees him teaming up with Leslie Ming from Denmark.  Their new out fit is called, “Ryskee”.   Paul De Homem-Christo is also the brother of  Guy-Manuel De Homem-Christo (one half of Daft Punk), and has used several aliases such as: Dark One, The Migrants, and Play Paul to name a few.

This particular track has a cool retro synth vibe with fun loving vocals from Leslie.

Dada Life is the brainchild of Stockholm-based Olle Corneer and Stefan Engblom. In the summer 2006, Dada Life released “Big Time” on Mylo’s Breastfed label and DJs all over got their first taste of the duo. Since then, there has been a steady stream of hit records from “The Great Fashionista Swindle,” “Vote Yes” and “Fun Fun Fun” to this spring’s “Happy Hands And Happy Feet” EP. Dada Life’s music is adored by both an eclectic mix of DJ talent – including David Guetta, Tiësto, Eric Prydz, Altern 8, Crookers and Don Rimini – and some of the most discerning underground tastemakers in the world (check out some of the quotes below).

Conceptually, Dada Life was inspired by the Dada cultural movement that originally began in Zurich during World War 1. “We don’t want to be perceived as arty, but we like the anti-ideas and f*ck-off-attitude of Dada. We have just taken the word Dada and filled it with whatever we like. Like the title track “Just Do The Dada” – it doesn’t really mean anything specific. That’s also the ideas we want to communicate – the basic concept of Dada Life – anti-everything, f*ck-all, but still not pinpointed. Everybody can do the Dada. But no one really knows what it is. All this has been the idea from the start. Hence older titles “This Machine Kills Breakfasts”, “Vote Yes” and “The Great Fashionista Swindle” and new tracks created for the album “Let’s Get Bleeped Tonight” and “Happy Hands & Happy Feet.” There’s a certain attitude to Dada Life, but it’s not specific,” Corneer explains.

When performing as a live act Dada Life is one box of bananas, a couple of bottles of Champagne and a lot of sweat and broken equipment. On the other hand, Dada Life DJ-gigs tend to go the same way with an MPC and some controllers that enable the boys to play around with samples and loops even when they DJ. They also constantly produce their own remixes/edits of good tunes in order to have something unique to play during the sets. North American audiences will experience this firsthand when Dada Life takes to the States for a full tour later this summer / early fall!

New remix by Odd Year of a track that Imogen Heap had written but never released.  It was tentatively titled, “The Song That Never Was“.

A short time ago, Imogen Heap took a few days out from making her new album to write a track that was supposed to feature at the end of TV programme.  She wrote the song and recorded all the vocals, leaving the music for the composer who was writing the rest of the score so she could get on with her much anticipated new album. For one reason or another the song wasn’t used and so the track never got completed. But their loss is Twestival’s gain as she’s excitedly donated the aforementioned vocals for ‘The Song That Never Was’ experiment.

If He Hollers -  A cross breed of Depeche Mode starkness with Duran Duran production sensibilites.  Easly one of the best tracks on the album!

Bottom Your Way To The Top – Industrial sounds and dark brooding make up the body of this track.  In my mind, the video that is conjured upon listening to this track is:   A slow free fall down an elevator shaft with glimpses of  your troubled past on each floor.
